Some of the people at your table are there entirely on purpose. This ceramic heart makes it official: "Friends Are Family You Choose With Your Heart."

Hand pressed in the USA, the graphic is fused under a glossy glaze that stays sharp for years. Chosen family, the friend who hosts every holiday, the one who never lets you eat alone in December: this is the one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a good gift for a chosen-family friend at Christmas?
A: Give something that would normally go to a relative, because that is the whole point of the phrase. A keepsake ornament is the standard family gift and reads as a promotion.

Q: How do I clean a ceramic ornament?
A: Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and nothing else. The glaze is non-porous, so dust lifts off without water, soap or polish.

Q: What do you give a friend who spends the holidays with you instead of family?
A: Give her a tree ornament, so that next year she has something of her own to hang wherever she ends up. It is a small way of saying the seat is permanent.

Q: Do friend groups actually keep ornament traditions going?
A: They do, and it is one of the few gift traditions that survives people moving away. Everyone ends up with the same heart on a different tree.

Q: What do you give a friend who hosts everyone every year?
A: Hosts get flowers and bottles constantly, so give her something that stays. An ornament goes on the tree she spends a weekend decorating for everyone else.

Q: What makes an ornament a keepsake rather than a decoration?
A: A keepsake carries a sentence rather than a pattern, so it gets read instead of just seen. This one is glazed ceramic with the words fused in, which is why it survives the decades.
